Working Agreements

Team agreements create clarity and mutual expectations in a social system. They can also increase productivity and create mental freedom. By making implicit social expectations explicit, team members focus on real and sincere interactions, immerse themselves in creativity, and let go of social anxiety. In this way, work arrangements help teams shape their ideal and productive environment and avoid misunderstandings that lead to conflict. Working conditions are an essential part of each team`s journey towards more and more self-organization. Next, ask participants to make a deal that will lead to successful team collaboration, using their considerations as a guide. Have all your ideas added to the digital document or whiteboard in the brainstorming area. The “de facto definition” or “loan definition” is not synonymous with “labour agreements”. This is a special type of working arrangement.

The “Definition of Completed” captures a team`s common understanding of what a “completed” item looks like. The “Loan Definition” captures a team`s common understanding of what a “finite” element looks like. Creating an agile teamwork agreement should be a collaborative process. As I mentioned earlier, there are many ways to do this, and I`m just going to describe a path that has worked well for our teams. When thinking about facilitating this process, ask yourself, “What is your team most comfortable with when it comes to collaboration?” At Crema, it is now a standard that we use a virtual whiteboard called Miro (even if no one joins remotely). Using a product like Miro can be useful because of the variety of features such as voting, reply, timer, etc. However, you can use a collaborative document like Dropbox Paper, regular sticky notes, or even a physical whiteboard to anchor discussions. It`s really up to you. If you have a small team (4 people or less), ask each person to write two agreements. It can be helpful to tell a personal story of your professional or personal life where working conditions have helped.

Finish the introduction by highlighting some of the benefits of working arrangements, as mentioned earlier. Open the meeting by explaining to the team that you, as a group, will create a set of behavioral agreements to lead the collaboration. Ask the team: Every few sprints, the work agreement should be updated, often by reviewing it retrospectively and asking a question like, “Is this still our way of working? What do we want to update? Which areas need new agreements? Team agreements offer a pragmatic remedy here: if the needs are known, they are more easily met. In this way, they highlight aspects of teamwork that are often implicitly mismanaged. There are many different articles online on the “right” way to create an agile teamwork agreement, but I think it`s best to develop a creative process that works well for your team and culture. Earlier this month, I chaired a session that worked very well for this team, but that doesn`t mean this path would work for everyone. However, you should be able to adopt the principles of this post and apply them to your team. Go through and vote to maintain or modify existing agreements.

Next, ask team members to reflect, suggest, and vote on adding additional agreements. Your teamwork agreement must be easily accessible and maintainable for all team members. It`s easy to forget something you`ve only seen once in a meeting. Find creative ways to consistently incorporate the key points of your agreement into your team`s focus. One way to do this is to create some kind of mural in the main workspace where the instructions will be displayed. Working modalities reflect a team`s common understanding of how individuals and the team as a whole want to work with each other and their stakeholders. A work agreement is a short set of guidelines created by the team for the team that determine what the team`s expectations are for each other. A well-written agreement should help establish and strengthen a clear and shared understanding among all team members of what they recognize as good behavior and communication. It is usually called a single “work arrangement”, but in reality it consists of many individual agreements for each topic or theme. Working arrangements provide the perfect opportunity to address sensitive issues such as conflict and disagreement management, as well as meeting schedules, under-execution and low engagement. These problems cannot be swept under the rug in the hope that they will disappear. Working arrangements create transparency and clarity so that teams can release the energy spent on conflicts and focus on their work.

In addition, team agreements offer the same value for remote teams as they do for personal teams. When choosing a teamwork agreement, the most important thing is to make sure your team is fully involved in the entire process. Make sure it addresses any “itchy” or uncomfortable topics and that the chord is placed in a place that is easily accessible to the team. Instead, in order to be a proactive and self-organized team, you should talk about these issues and use the agreement as an action plan to overcome them. If your team has been working together for some time, you`ve identified some of the main issues or concerns that your agreement needs to address. A remote campaign team reflects and votes on the working modalities they will commit to and gather feedback in Confluence. The most important factor in developing a teamwork agreement is to identify the challenges your team faces. Learn about the unique challenges of collaboration for your team, then focus on solving them specifically. For Scrum teams, it is important to decide and agree on the duration of the sprint, the day and time of each event, how we create the requirements, the different roles and responsibilities, etc. The Agile Academy Working Agreement Canvas helps Scrum Masters and their teams systematically create their work agreements. Work arrangements are a simple and powerful way to create explicit guidelines on the type of work culture you want for your team. They remind everyone how to engage in respectful behavior and communication.

In this article, we`ll help you understand why these agreements are useful and how you can help your team create their own. In this step, clarify what the moderator team needs to fulfill these work arrangements. Ask participants the following question: “What do you need from me as a Scrum Master to create the atmosphere described above?” On the other hand, I saw teams hanging by a thread and barely achieving their goals, if at all, because team members couldn`t see how they fit into the bigger picture and just weren`t invested. Fortunately, there is a way to solve this problem: the teamwork agreement. Depending on the framework used by teams or their individual preferences, some work arrangements refer to “standards”, “rules of engagement”, “ground rules”, “team rules”, “team agreements”, “team contracts” or “collaboration guidelines”. .
